Following the successful Hosted Buyer Ice-Breaker reception networking event which took place at the Hotel Maximilian Beijing last night, CIBTM opened its doors today at 10 am with the official Opening Ceremony presented by Jacqui Timmins, Exhibition Director CIBTM and AIME and Sallie Coventry, IBTM Global Events Portfolio Director of Reed Travel Exhibitions as well as Wang Yue, Deputy Chairman of Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development.
This year, the number of Hosted Buyers has reached a record of 424 - the highest number of Hosted Buyers ever appointed at CIBTM. Coming from regions of large business demand, such as Europe, Americas, Oceania and Asia, international buyers have increased by 28% in comparison to 2013, who have all been invited and qualified to represent the countries with the largest purchasing power and demand.
CIBTM 2014 also presents a comprehensive lineup of suppliers, including destination management companies, destinations, convention bureaus, hotels, technology suppliers, cruises lines and MICE services. This year’s show floor covers 11,000 square metres, a 30% increase from last year and a record size for CIBTM. For three days this week, it will become the work base for 5,300 industry professionals from China and abroad.
CIBTM 2014’s opening day began with an important educational session entitled: “Transform Your Meetings: The Five Principles of Meeting Design” and presented in partnership with MPI. This exclusive session introduced a step by step guide to designing meetings to include: Assessment and Evaluation, Meaningful Engagement, Distributed Learning, Collaboration and Experience – that can change meetings from ordinary to extraordinary.
In the following sessions, attendees heard more about social media best practices and how to navigate China's social media channels, attended presentations by some of the most influential academics from China and the United Kingdom who shared their unique perspectives on China’s meetings and events industry as well as learnt how to run a hybrid event of their own. Complimentary massages were offered in the relaxation zone and tea or coffee in the CIBTM Café, and there was also a photo booth area for delegates to capture an image of their show experience.
The afternoon also included a key session dedicated to association buyers, the “CPAM Taster”, provided by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) which highlighted its role, mission and value in assisting association professionals to build the skills they need to effectively manage delegates.
In addition, Cathy Breden, Chief Operating Officer, International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) led the session entitled “How To Help Your Exhibitors Get The Most From Your Event” and discussed the latest trends, challenges and opportunities for ensuring exhibitors’ success and help them achieve both ROI and ROO.
Besides a bustling show floor with a lot of interaction between exhibitors, Hosted Buyers and Trade Visitors, Saint Petersburg, Russia, held a destination focus session highlighting how the city is a tourist and meeting destination locally and internationally. “Shining with its magnificence, Saint Petersburg is an open-air museum, on the one hand, while being a unique congress and event centre of Russia, on the other. It has been a significant first day for us and we are looking forward to the upcoming days of the show,” commented Yulia Ryabukhina, General Manager of Bolshoi Tourism Saint Petersburg.
